The National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) is currently the most authoritative national dataset of wetlands; however, much of the data for the State of Tennessee dates to the mid 1980’s. The rapid evolution of GeoAI and powerful cloud computing capabilities provides a promising avenue to investigate, predict, quantify, and monitor wetlands. Beginning in 2024, the State of Tennessee, Department of Environment and Conservation, collaborated with Skytec, to develop an enhanced version of Esri’s Wetland Identification Model (WIM) and derive wetland predictions for the entire state. Model outputs indicate that the current NWI data significantly underestimates the numbers and extents of wetlands throughout the state. The new wetland dataset has proven to be extremely valuable to stakeholders for evaluating and actively monitoring conservation priorities, assessing development suitability and costs, adding efficiencies to permit submittals, and assessing restoration or mitigation feasibility.
