Geographic Information System Professional (GISP) Certification Information

Obtaining a GISP certification is an excellent way to deepen your knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and advance your career. To qualify for the GISP designation, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Professional Experience: A minimum of four years of GIS-related work experience.
  • Portfolio Review: Accumulate the required points through education, experience, and contributions to the profession. (Fee: $200 due at submission)
  • GISCI Core Technical Exam®: Successfully pass the exam to demonstrate technical proficiency. (Fee: $250)

Important Notes

  • You do not need to complete your portfolio before taking the exam. Passing the exam first can strengthen your portfolio submission and increase the likelihood of approval.
  • It is highly recommended that you follow GISCI’s Official Study Guide and take the practice exam.
  • Practice Exam: $30 (includes two attempts)
    • First Attempt: Identify knowledge gaps and guide your study plan.
    • Second Attempt: Validate your preparation and confirm mastery of the material.

Portfolio Preparation

You can begin building your portfolio at any stage - whether you are a seasoned professional with 15 years of experience or a student still pursuing your degree. Starting early ensures you are well-prepared when you meet the eligibility requirements. GISCI provides a detailed guide to help you through the portfolio process.

TNGIC can be a large part of your portfolio! Attending, presenting and volunteering can provide you with necessary contribution and education points you need for the initial GISP application or recertification.

Ethics and Professional Conduct

One of the fundamental principles of being a GISP is a commitment to ethical and moral conduct. GIS plays a critical role in shaping decisions that impact communities, so it is essential to uphold a strong ethical code that protects the people we serve. When submitting your application - whether for initial certification or recertification - you must sign and include the GISCI Code of Ethics Agreement.

Exam Preparation Resources

If you plan to take the exam, consider enrolling in a GISP Exam Prep course and/or joining a study group. Additional resources, such as the GIS&T Body of Knowledge, are available on GISCI’s website to support your preparation.
